WE ARE PRESENTING….
THE PURPOSE OF TOURISM PLANNING

INTRODUCTION
 Massive development of resources is the

consequence as millions more people
travel to seek personal rewards from their
experiences. As scenery and other natural
resources are touted in promotion, the
visitor often experiences more ugly
commercialism than scenery.

 For Example- Coastal areas are promoted

clear water and pristine beaches, the visitors
often discovers a concrete jungle of hotels
and waterfront water sewage pollution.

 But

if we dig deep we can
discover
the
reason
for
unfullfillment of promises. Tourism
development is being done by
those
who
have
little
understanding of what tourism
really is and how to plan & design
it.

HOW DO WE UNDERSTAND TOURISM?
Definition:
 According to the WTO Definition “Tourism
comprises the activities of persons
travelling to and staying in places outside
their usual environment for not more than
one year for leisure, business and other
purposes.”

Example:

WHAT IS TOURISM PLANNING?
Basically, tourism planning means to create an
overview that will include the mission, goals,
objectives and strategy and tools for the overall
development of tourism in any country.
Tourism planning must involve –
 Mission, goals and objectives for both individual and
country.
 Different strategies and tools and choose the best among them.
 Find out problems that can take place during the
execution of plans and find feasible solution.
 During setting up any plans the tourism planners must
be aware of the plan being flexible.

DIFFERENT SECTORS OF TOURISM
Tourism is an agglomeration of land development
and programs designed to meet the needs of
travelers. The better this is understood, the better
tourism can be planned and the more successful
it will be.

Those who make development and management
decisions for tourism are grouped in three very
important and interdependent sectors –
i) Business Sector
ii) Nonprofit Sector &
iii) Governmental Sector

BUSINESS SECTOR

NONPROFIT SECTOR
 The nonprofit sector generally is one in
which charges can be made for products
and services but all revenues must be
expended for operational and capital costs,
not as investments.
 Nonprofit tourist attractions typically
receive revenues from gate receipts,
admissions and foundation grants.

GOVERNMENTAL SECTOR
 Though tourism is dominated by business
sector, it is developed and managed by
another
very
important
group

government.
 The primary role of government is
governance

enactment
and
implementation of laws and regulations.

 Understanding the many policies and
practices of governmental agencies is
essential to all tourism planning and
development.
 For Example – some destinations are
not popular with travelers because water
supplies and police protection are in
adequate.

DEVELOPERS(SECTORS) AND TOURIST PERSPECTIVES

Every developer makes decisions on development for
its own specific role in tourism. Each development
provides for one and only one item of use by the tourist
at one point in time on the entire journey.

Collectively, all these independent decision makers
produce what we now call tourism development
of the supply side.
These are the action groups that facilitate travel by
locating land, building structures, and managing
places and programs. Without them, tourism
would not function.
