Referring to a stretch of coast you have studied, explain how and why some coasts are under threat from economic development (10 Marks)

Some coasts such as Southampton could be considered under threat from economic development due to the fact they are extremely reliant on nearby industries as the area of Southampton is known to have advantages for industry as it is sheltered from storms in the English channel, deep water for large ships and lots of flat land for development. However, there is a large amount of pressure on Southampton, the majority of the pressure is based on Southampton’s water as along its western edge is a large area of salt marsh, just where industrial development has taken place for oil refinery in Fawly, a town in Southampton. The oil refinery is the largest in the UK, the location of the Solent is because it is convenient for tankers in Europe. Although this is a large advantage to Southampton, the oil refinery causes problems and potentially causes threat to the Coast as it damages it in many ways such as the biggest problem being Oil spills. Oil spills can be a threat to economic development as oil is a main factor of industry in Southampton and if an oil spill occurs like it did previously in 1989 it causes serious damage to the sea and damage to the industry as less money will be earned due to the spill, which has a negative outcome on the economic development of Southampton as they are very reliant on their oil industry.

Metal pollution is a problem in Southampton water. The paints that are used to stop organisms such as barnacles attaching themselves to the underside of the boat contain a chemical TBT which contains a lot of tin. This tin becomes eroded and falls into the sea creating a build up destroying habitats and making it highly polluted. This results in the local council having to spend money to get rid of the build up in the estuaries, which ultimately costs a lot of money and the coast is under threat due to this...
