impacted
the
human
language
with
the
introduction
of
text
messaging, social networking,
and
other
various
technological
advances.
Cellular devices are great
examples of sources that have
influenced language. In efforts
to reduce character use and
time, abbreviations of words
have become very common.
Slang words such as “LOL”
(laugh out loud) and “BRB”
(be right back) have grown
popularity. With the majority of
the US population having
access to technology, it is
evident that technology has
essentially altered the human
language.

According to Benjamin
Whorf (1956), language
influences
the
thought
processes. Every language
has expresses a value
system. For example, the
Inuit language had multiple
words for types of snow
because it meant survival
for them to combat snow.
Gender differences include
the assumptions of genders
for certain occupations

Do Animals Learn
Language?
It is known that most
animals communicate with
each other through a series
of sounds. However, they
do not learn a language for
there is no established rule
for grammatical sentences
with meaning. Despite this,
animals have shown ability
to
communicate
with
humans.

STAGE 1

What is Language?
General Definition

Semantics

Language is the physical, verbal, and
basic form of communication. It is
essentially a system of words that
involves three elements: phonemes,
morphemes, and syntax.

Semantics are the studies
used to identify meaning
of a word based on its
context,
use,
and
surrounding words. Words
commonly have double or
more meanings to them. With semantics,
we may be able to extract meaning.

Phonemes
Phonemes are the smallest units of
sound in a language.
They may consist of
one letter such as the
letter t or tow letters like

sh.
Morphemes
Morphemes are
the
smallest
units with meaning. These include
prefixes, suffixes, letters, and words. Ex.

re-, -ed, -s, & love.
Syntax
Syntax is the rules in
specific
languages
used to essentially create meaningful
and grammatically correct sentences.

Known as the “babble” stage,
around four
months infants
begin to
babble sounds
such as dadada & bababa..
STAGE 2
Around a year’s time, the infant
begins to describe objects with
full single words. They start to
express longer thoughts with
single words such as, “da” for
“Where is my father?”

Language Development
There are numerous theories
regarding the development of
language
in
the
human
lifestyle. B.F. Skinner believed
that learned language is the
result of operant conditioning
while others disagreed and
believe language is understood in
children even before any reinforcement.
Other psychologists such as Noam
Chomsky suggest that language develops
as a result of observation, exploration, and
imitation. Chomsky also believed that the
ability of understanding language comes
from inheritance.

STAGE 3
At nearly three years of age, the
infant begins to place two
words together to express an
idea. For example “Me play,”
for “I would like to play.”
STAGE 4
In ages 2-3, the child may form
sentences that leave out
prepositions and articles.
However, by age 5, the child
usually develops a full basic
understanding of the language.
