Mankind has marched forward in a long journey towards economic development and prosperity. To have a stable growth of the country’s GDP, man has applied science and technology to establish hydel projects, irrigation systems, roads and railways and mines in suitable areas. These infrastructure projects though increase productivity and production to a great extent, they also lead involuntary displacement. This paper tries to examine the impact of development and displacement on the income and consumption of the poor, looking at two rural villages in Chennai.
