INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background to the Study
The advent of Bottled Water in Nigeria is a recent phenomenon as compared to when it started in the Western World such as Britain and the United States of America. The production of bottled water in Nigeria has the main objective of satisfying the increasing demand by Nigerians for genuine, pure and natural spring water for healthy drinking by athletes, in conferences, seminars, and workshops. One interesting thing about the production of bottled water in Nigeria is that the major raw material required is 95% locally sourced with only 5% imported(Udalor,2009). It is expected that with the operations of petrochemical industries in Nigeria, the imported materials will become available locally. Bottled water continues to thrive due to lack of potable tap water in the country, with the majority of houses having no running water at all. While some households can afford to have their own boreholes, the water supplies are sometimes unfit for human consumption since there is no distillation system. The lack of steady electricity also contributes to the demand for bottled water, given the need for chilled water. Consequently, the total volume growth was 7% slightly faster in 2010 than 2009, as an increasing number of people are opting to consume bottled water and there is a large amount of brands that are presented in both bottles and flexible plastics (wikipedia, 2010). Bottled water has become an indispensable prop of the daily lives of consumers almost any where in the world today. It is truly a marketing phenomenon of the 21st century’s global consumer culture. Despite having drawn up drinking water straight from tap, many consumers now prefer paying for the luxury of drinking bottled water, and are raising a generation of children that view bottled water as a superior alternative to tap water. They have learnt to accept paying money for a commodity which used to be provided, and can still be obtained freely from taps in their homes.
